Final Artist Statement and Example

Being an artist, inspiration is the main factors, which helps us to express and to pass on our ideas to the audience. This inspiration drives from many reasons. One of them is the personal aspect of the artist. One of the aspects can be presented through students’ perspective. My perspective as an international student, for instance, I can say that there is a very long and a very difficult process to be able to come to the United States. We have to go through many security checking and self-identifying processes from the US government.
After four years in the United States, the feeling of being violated still remains in our mind. No matter what we do, to some extent, we feel as we are treated as the minority. Therefore, as international students, we might feel like we have no stability in living in this country. We don't know what is going to happen if we do something wrong. We have to be aware all the time. Even though we all receive good education and learn new experiences, is this worth? Because the longer we live here, the more we feel like we are being controlled by others instead of controlling and being ourselves.

Week 8

During week 8, I am mixing the sound for my project. It will be sounds from different activities are playing at the same time. I am also decided to use black and white video instead of using color. Some of the footage will be reshoot to make it more effective and fit with the idea of the project.

I am going to add one of the screen to be a live time clip of people watching my work so that people will get invole and understand more about my project.

As this point, I want to set up my work inside the room and make the viewer feel as a security guard.

Installation & Particals

What I am working on my project now is to find the best way to present my work. I am also thinking about using 16 televisions stuck on top of each other. THerefore, each television will present one activity.

As I posted last week, I also working more on it. I am putting some of the particals to make it look like surveillance cam for example, Noise, desaturation, and the timer.

Week Three Idea

as I mentioned about my idea from last week, I am thinking I will stick with the same idea as a result of time consuming and the new concept that is not clear enough.

What I am planing to change is:

I will have nine screen which present one idea of privacy at the time. The viewer are able to change the screen to another idea by using tricker on the key board.

The program that I will use as a controller is called Isadora

Second Week Progress

I was doing the research about how to approach the idea more for the past two week. What I intend to do is to make viewer to understand more about the idea easier.

What I am thinking now is to maintain the same topic "Privacy" but change the project.

The project still going to be a video project. I am trying to build the long dark room to make people walk. When people walk across the room, they will tricker the motion sencer which will play sounds of people walking behind them. The sound are controlling by how fast the people walk, the more people walk faster, the more walking sound is getting louder.

The sencer that I am talking will using the distance sencer which will connect to the isadora program.

What I am concer now is the buget, the space that school will provide, and how to build the room

Artist Statement and Proposal

To reflect society is the goal of being an artist. I’m not only creating pieces of work, but I’m also trying to assist people to understand what is happening in their reality nowadays through my art piece. Since everyone has different perception through the world, I believe my artwork will reflect their attitude in everyday lives. In addition, I want my art to work as a mirror, which reflects the audience’s lifestyle. On the other hand, just by looking at the artwork, people can also and think of many things that have happened in their lives. Art is rich. People learn through the arts. It is universal because whatever the audience thinks and gets from the artwork come from their perception. This is why it is not on one side or the other. Some people might say art is biased and some might say it is not depending on their perspective. Therefore, as an artist, the job is to express my feeling and idea through the arts and it is the audience who has to take the next step, which is to analyze and associate the work with their thoughts by themselves. Sometimes things happen so fast that we don't have enough time to notice or think about it. We don't even have time to think about how we are going to face or response the situation. Therefore, this is a good opportunity for me to help and let people understand how they are supposed to fully explore their lifestyle and make themselves comfortable in society.
In this terminal project, the topic that I am going to focus on is how much privacy people have nowadays. Have we ever noticed that everything we are doing in present, someone keeps watching and trying to violate our privacy? Some groups of people may think that it is a good thing so that everybody in the society follows the regulation. On the other hand, some may think it should be kept among themselves only. Therefore, the questions are: how much and how far we should allow these governments and people get close to us and which way of approaching is good for both side? Hopefully in the end, people will realize and learn how to live in this society and be aware of being violated easily. If people learn from this idea, hopefully, everybody can live and compromise this situation with positive attitude and careful thought.
For the project itself, I would like to show how government operates their jobs and what they see on the screen. My project will be presented as a video projected on the wall. In each wall, there will be at least 50 multiple screens playing. All screens will play at the same time. Some of them will stop playing at some point, playing faster, playing slower, and looping. To get people’s attention, one of the screens will be the actual camera, which is pointing and recording the audience who is looking at my work inside of the gallery. The projector will project in four different ways, to the left wall, the right wall, the front wall, and the ceiling.
From my observation, I would like have my artwork presenting in Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. The location I am interested in putting my work is the room on the second floor. The reason is that it has a lot of space to place my work. By using that room, I have to enough space to place all monitors and the projector. It allows me to fully present my work.
